1. Old vs. New Style Licenses

Important if you have purchased new SoapUI Pro licenses and are still using a old (pre 4.5) version of SoapUI Pro: up to version 4.0.x of SoapUI Pro the license files have had the .lic file extension but starting with version 4.5 these license files have a different format and use the .key file extension instead. These “new-style” licenses are not compatible with older versions of SoapUI Pro; if you need an old-style license for use with an older version you need to get in touch with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it so we can generate the according licenses for you, please include a reference to your license purchase in this email.

Please note that all content in the remainder of this document refers to the handling of new-style licenses, for information on how to install an old-style license please read Old Style Licenses.

2. Different License Types and Courtesy Mode

The following license types are currently available for SoapUI Pro:

  • Trial licenses : 14 day duration
  • Standard licenses : 1- 3 year duration
  • Renewal licenses : 1-3 year duration, require an existing standard or renewal license to be installed
  • Floating licenses : 1-3 year duration (read about how to install and user here)

When a license expires or is deactivated (see below), SoapUI Pro will go into “Courtesy Mode” which allows you to continue using SoapUI Pro with the following limitations:

  • All Pro-specific features are disabled in the GUI
  • Pro-specific TestSteps (DataSource, DataSink, etc.) are still executed as part of a TestCase execution but can’t be created or modified in your tests.

3. Installing your License

When starting SoapUI Pro the first time you will be prompted with the following dialog:

select-license

The floating-license scenario is covered in Installing your Floating License; here we will focus on local license files instead. Specify the .key file you received from SmartBear (you might have to unpack from the zip file first);

select-license-with-filename

Press OK to move to the next step which prompts you to accept the license agreement:

Press OK to accept, after this you will be prompted to activate your license:

select-activate-online

If you already have an activated license, select the “I Already Have Activated License” option and specify this in the following dialog.

If you have a working internet connection, select the “Activate Online” option which will prompt you for detailed user information (this step is skipped for trial and renewal licenses):

activate-online

Enter your information and press the “Finish” button – you will be prompted on how to connect to our activation server:

Set up your proxy connection if required and press “Finish” – SoapUI Pro will contact our activation server and validate your license and entered information:

If all goes well the following dialog will be shown and SoapUI Pro will be ready for usage.

If an error occurs during activation you will be prompted accordingly:

  • If the activation fails for network connectivity reasons you will be prompted to do offline activation instead (see below)
  • If the license is not valid for activation you will be prompted with a corresponding error message and required to enter a valid license file instead.

4. Offline Activation

Offline activation requires you to send activation information to SmartBear so we can manually activate your license and send an activated license back to you. When selecting offline activation you will be prompted as follows:

Press the “Copy” button to copy the relevant information to your clipboard and paste it into an email to the specified email address. Once validated and activated we will return an activated license file to you which can be specified in the dialog presented when pressing “Next”:

Press OK to start using SoapUI Pro.

5. License Deactivation

If you have used up all your activations or need to move the license on another machine you can deactivate the license with the “Deactivate License” menu option, which will initially prompt you if you are sure:

deactivate-prompt

and then open this dialog:

deactivate-license

Confirm that you want to deactivate the license (this cannot be undone!) and press the “Next” button, which will show you the following dialog (please note that the license is now deactivated!):

selecton-deactivate-online

If you have an online connection select the “Online” option above and press “Next”. The next step will prompt you for your internet connection details (just as for license activation above):

deactivate-internat-connection

Press next to finish the deactivation process, a progress dialog will be shown:

deactivation-progress

After completion you will either be returned to SoapUI Pro running in Courtesy Mode (if you deactivated a standard or renewal license) or you will be prompted to exit (if you deactivated a Trial).

6. Offline Deactivation

If selecting to deactivate your license offline in the process outlined above, the following dialog will be shown:

offline-deactivation

Use the “Copy” button to copy the relevant information to your local clipboard and paste it into an email to the specified address.
